Hooray for summer !

Hello book hoes !

We’re back with another great month of book clubs ! I have a few quick announcements and then we can dive right into the good stuff.

Firstly, starting in July our FANTASY & FABLES Book Club will be hosted at Liz’s Book Bar in Cobble Hill ! Hooray for supporting independent bookstores ! More information will be coming out shortly as we draw closer to the beginning of our summer at Liz’s, but for now I am just so excited we get to be there.

Secondly, if you are signing up for our June MURDER, THEY READ Book Club then you have a chance to get the book FOR FREE ! Woo ! Gallery Books has been kind enough to offer us copies of COUNT MY LIES, our June book club pick. You can pick the books up at our upcoming May book club or at either of our May book exchange events. If you are not attending any of these events but you’d still like to pick up your book, please email and let me know if you will be attending another book club and I can make sure to have the book for you. All you have to do is show confirmation of your ticket to receive your copy.

As many of you already know, the venue we have been at the longest - 66 Greenpoint Bar - officially closed its doors permanently a few weeks ago. So though we had planned to have our book exchanges at this location in May, we will now be having them at Moxy East Village. Tickets are still open and available for anyone who wants to come through and exchange some books.

I’m really looking forward to the June book clubs, and I’m already working on some fun summer events for the book hoes. Below you’ll find all the book clubs in chronological order. Happy reading !

FEMMES Book Club: Sunday, June 1st at 4:00pm

THOSE FATAL FLOWERS by Shannon Ives

MURDER, THEY READ Book Club: Monday, June 2nd at 6:30pm

COUNT MY LIES by Sophie Stava

A read-in-one-night suspense thriller narrated by a compulsive liar whose little white lies allow her to enter into the life and comfort of a wealthy married couple who are harboring much darker secrets themselves. For the millions of us still chasing those gone girls, this is perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Lucy Foley, and Laura Dave.

Sloane Caraway is a liar.

Harmless lies, mostly, to make her self-proclaimed sad, little life a bit more interesting.

So when Sloane sees a young girl in tears at a park one afternoon, she can't help herself—she tells the girl's (very attractive) dad she's a nurse and helps him pull a bee stinger from the girl's foot.

With this lie, and chance encounter, Sloane becomes the nanny for the wealthy, and privileged Jay and Violet Lockhart. The perfect New York couple, with a brownstone, a daughter in private school, and summers on Block Island.

But maybe Sloane isn't the only one lying, and all that's picture-perfect harbors a much more dangerous truth. To say anything more is to spoil the most exciting, twisty, and bitingly smart suspense novel to come out in years.

ROMANTICS Book Club: Tuesday, June 3rd at 7:15pm

PASSION PROJECT by London Sperry

A compassionate and hopeful romantic comedy, Passion Project is a reminder that love is waiting for us to let it in

FANTASY & FABLES Book Club: Wednesday, June 4th at 7:00pm

THIS MONSTER OF MINE by Shalini Abeysekara

LIQUID: A LOVE STORY by Miriam Rahmani

The Marriage Plot meets The Idiot in this brilliant debut, which tells the story of a young Muslim scholar stuck in the mire of adjunct professorship in Los Angeles who decides to give up her career in academia and marry rich, committing herself to 100 dates in the course of a single summer. By midsummer reality hits, taking her—and her project—to Tehran.

The unnamed Iranian-Indian American narrator of Liquid, A Love Story has always believed herself to be the smartest person in the room. And from an early age, she and her best friend—a poet-turned-marketer named Adam—have turned their noses up at other peoples’ riches. But two years after earning a PhD from UCLA, the narrator is no closer to the middle-class comfort promised to her by the prestige of her fancy, scholarship-funded education and the successes of her immigrant parents. Jokingly, Adam suggests she just marry rich.

But our protagonist, whose PhD thesis compared Eastern and Western views of marriage in film and literature, takes the idea seriously. She makes a spreadsheet and outlines a 100 dates with people of all genders and a marriage proposal in hand by the official start of the fall semester. What follows is a whirlwind summer packed with martinis sans vermouth with the lazy scion of an Eastside construction empire; board games with a butch producer who owns a house in the hills and a newly dented Porsche; a Venmo request from a “socialist” trust fund babe; and an evening spent dodging the halitosis of a maxillofacial surgeon from Orange County.

Only a tragedy in Tehran and an overdue familial reckoning can alter the narrator’s increasingly manic trajectory and force her to confront the contradictions of her life in Los Angeles. And as doubts begin to creep in about her marriage project, it suddenly seems possible that the eligible prospect she’s been looking for has been beneath her nose the entire time.

BOOK HOES WHO BRUNCH Book Club: Saturday, June 7th at 10:00am

BROKEN COUNTRY by Clare Leslie Hall

BOOK HOES WINE NIGHT Book Club: Sunday, June 8th at 5:00pm

SET PIECE by Lana Schwartz

*** This book club includes a wine-tasting and *weather-permitting* we will be on the rooftop of Cherry on Top, a wine bar in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Book Club will be purchasing three bottles of wine for us to taste throughout the book club experience but members are more than welcome to purchase their own drinks and try different wines/options throughout the evening as well.

BOOK CLUB FROM BED Virtual Book Club: Sunday, June 8th at 8:30pm EST

BUTTER by Asako Yuzuki

The cult Japanese bestseller about a female gourmet cook and serial killer and the journalist intent on cracking her case, inspired by a true story.

There are two things that I can simply not tolerate: feminists and margarine.

Gourmet cook Manako Kajii sits in Tokyo Detention Center convicted of the serial murders of lonely businessmen, who she is said to have seduced with her delicious home cooking. The case has captured the nation’s imagination but Kajii refuses to speak with the press, entertaining no visitors.
